Here are 9 ways to minimize identity theft damage.
- Order your checks from your local bank. Have the checks sent directly to your bank and pick them up from there.
- When ordering checks don't put your SSN, DOB or Phone Number on your checks.
- Don't write your account number on the back of your checks.
- File a police report or incident report to report the identity theft.
- File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, Better Business Bureau and your state's Attorney General or Consumer Affairs Office.
- Put a fraud alert on your Equifax, Experian and TransUnion credit reports. Request an extended alert after the initial 90-day alert has expired.
- Review your credit report for the next year to ensure no new accounts have been opened in your name.
- Minimize the amount of online shopping and use secure websites with https: or shttps:.
- Verify receipts with monthly statements and verify bank account balances weekly.
