I found the linked Forbers map a very interesting way to compare how much of a tax burden each state places on the shoulders of it's average citizen. How does your state compare to NY/NJ and Alaska?
State and local taxes consumed an average of 9.7% of Americans' income in 2008, but with big geographic variations. New Jersey and New York residents carry the heaviest load. We used data from the Tax Foundation to create this historical map of relative tax burden, as a percentage of state per capita income.. Note that in calculating the burden on each state's residents, the Foundation includes levies they pay to other states, while excluding income the state collects from out-of-staters. So Alaska, which collects most of its revenue from out-of-staters in the form of oil taxes, has the lowest burden on in-state residents. Click on any state to see its current tax burden.
