I feel I should make an effort to conserve the heat as much as I can. Any good ideas on what I can do that's not going to break the bank? Our attic is well insulated at least . The windows aren't and I can't afford to replace them.

Caulk, caulk and more caulk. Fill all the gaps you can find in brickwork outside. Once you start looking you'll be amazed how many there are. Check around your light switch plates too for draughts and replace them with bigger plates if need be.

Nice cheap weatherization tip here if you don't care about how it looks nor need to have a crystal clear view out the window. Bubble Wrap insulation for the windows! I'm going to hunt in my shed and see if I have some and test it out. We have small windows in our bedroom and they are draughty.

We have large perspex panels that we put up indoors every year over the windows. They are about a quarter inch thick and we have swivel clips around the edge of the window frames. I don't know what you'd call them. You just position the panel against the glass then swivel these 90 degrees to hold it in place. Kind of like when you put a picture frame back together and swivel the clips in place to hold the backing.
It takes two, one to hold it while the other does the clips, and they are up until Spring. We don't do every window, just the largest ones, so we can still open some. You'd not know they were there unless you look close.
Without frugality none can be rich, and with it very few would be poor.
