My friend sent me an email and the idea is to keep your car keys remote beside your bed. If you hear a prowler in the house or around the property, you set off your car alarm with it to scare them off. These have a range of about 50 feet and would both scare the person into running off and alert your neighbors something was wrong. I think that's a clever idea!

Especially good if you have nosy neighbors like me. I'm not calling my neighbors nosy. I'm saying I am LOL. I'd be up like a shot if I heard that going off for longer than half a minute. Great tip, cookiefan.

Yep. Clever idea.  Use it sparingly of course, or your nosy neighbors might come have a word with you :)

LOL! That's true. It's not the best solution if you're the type that jumps at shadows. You could find it's your neighbors that are breaking in to shut you up! ;) In an emergency though, that would work.

You can also buy alarm you install yourself at Radioshack. It will  set alarm if a door is opened that it is installed on. They come with a key you use to turn it off, and run around $10-15 per unit. They DO NOT alert the police or other authorities, they just scare off intruders.

My only scare would be that the burgular would come equipped with an identical key, as they are all the same.
Guess they wouldn't be that smart though, eh?

I thought the keys on those kinds of things were all different or at least varied. Are they not? I liked the idea until I read that because my car's not got a remote.

Even cheaper is to hang a windchime outside the door. When the door's opened it will hit the windchime. Which is good if you like windchimes and don't mind them rattling in the wind all the time. I hate them.
