Have I got you all singing that now? You're all older than you look. LOL.
No, seriously , when I saw gram2bri talking about visiting Texas it reminded me about this article on cheap flights. It's good to know when to look for them online. The article gives more information but this part was very helpful to me.
If you tend to make travel plans during weekend downtime, reconsider. The best time to shop is late Monday or early Tuesday, some fare experts say. Airlines often start fare sales on Sunday night or Monday morning, said Rick Seaney of FareCompare.com. Those sales alone are fine if they include the flight you want. But other carriers generally match the fare sale by Monday evening or Tuesday morning, giving you more choices.
Seaney said Wednesdays are generally the cheapest day to fly. Tuesdays and Saturdays are also good days to fly because demand is low and the airlines are trying to fill seats. It's natural for travelers to book their flight when the workday is done or the kids are asleep. But the airlines are posting fares on their own schedule. They file fares to the computer system that shares them among Web sites and travel agents three times each weekday -- 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern time. It's 5 p.m. Eastern on Saturdays and Sundays. That means fares can change at those times, so when you do see a fare at the price you're looking for, grab it.

Some of the sites they talk about there like FareCompare I'd not heard of. Got any good ones you use or prefer to use? I know I looked at Orbitz before and found it expensive but that might have been unfortunate timing.
That's a good place to start too Kay, thanks. The dreaded Fares do not include all government-imposed taxes and fees is always there of course but we'd be paying that whether it's full price or not.
We recently purchased a couple of RT tix to Cancun for a trip in May.
We went thru http://www.cheaptickets.com/ and are scheduled on Delta. The agreed upon price was actually more than what we were actually charged on our credit card. We agreed to a cost of about $350 but were charged about $320 each.
Ya gotta love that.

And how often does that happen!! That's great, micharch. :)
How about hotels, have you booked that yet? I've heard good things about Priceline's Name Your Own Price service. I don't know if they cover Cancun though. Is the trip for a special occasion?

Wow, how fantastic. I never get that lucky! I have a neighbor who booked a flight to CA this morning and it cost her $800. She already had it all done by the time she spoke to me or I'd have gave her these links.

My sister and her husband own a B&B on what they call the "Riviera Maya" about an hour and a half from Cancun, so we will be staying with them.

Very nice indeed, micharch. Don't you be deciding to stay once you get there and forgetting about us. ;)
It must be great to have family in the hotel business. :) Speaking of hotels, the next trend is here. A micro-hotel. Cozy or cramped? 7 feet x 8 feet rooms but for a New York City hotel, who would complain to pay less than three figures a night. You can pretend you're at sea. Ahoy there, me hearties!
Tiny hotel room.
I found one way to escape the baggage charges airlines are adding. Southwest Airlines lets you have your first and second bag free.

The tips in this slideshow, 9 Ways to Get Your Vacation for less, are good. I didn't know about this Yapta site.
3. Time it right. At yapta.com, you can track the price of a flight before and after you book it, and yapta.com will alert you (by e-mail or Twitter) if the rate drops. Contact the airline directly for a refund; for $15, Yapta will go to bat for you. "The best time to book a flight is 12:01 a.m. Wednesday morning, in the time zone where the airline is based," says Peter Greenberg. "Don't do it on the website. Pick up the phone."

Did you see the news about the new airliner Jet America? They have 9 seats on every flight for $9.
Imagine taking a national flight from Newark for only $9. After spending hundreds of dollars on most national airlines, the offer seems too good to be true, but Jet America is trying to make these cheap fares a reality.
Jet America will offer 9 seats on every flight for only $9. Keep in mind that there is also a $5 convenience fee per ticket, which is written in small print at the bottom of the Jet America website. If you decide to make a booking over the phone there will be an additional call center fee of $10. Despite those extra charges the flights are still considerably cheaper than most other airlines.

Thanks a lot Savannah. I can't get Ole Blue Eyes singing that song out my head now!
Good post. :) I've missed booking flights before I saw that were bargains. I kept waiting to see how far they'd drop and another flier snapped them up. Travelation was the best I found for international ones. A good tip is to register at the sites for any news alerts on flights you're watching out for.
I thought flights would get cheaper the closer it got to flight day. No wonder I can't get a bargain LOL.
American Airlines had just announced reduced fares between now and May 20 for continental US flights, but there's conditions and you need to buy tickets no later than March 16.
