Make sure that you add your name and phone # to the DNC list. That is, unless you actually actually enjoy receiving phone calls from telemarketers all day and night.

To avoid being scammed, Southwick urged consumers never to give unknown telemarketers personal information over the phone, including Social Security, bank or credit card numbers. She also advised reviewing a contract with all terms and conditions before submitting any payment, as refunds are often difficult to acquire.
Consumers also can add their phone number to the federal Do Not Call list by visiting www.donotcall.gov. More than 168 million numbers are already registered, according to Federal Trade Commission officials.

Re: Do Not Call List

We joined that long ago. I can't stand telemarketers that won't take no for an answer. I had one of them call years ago during a power cut who still wanted to talk! I hung up and I hate to do that but there was no other way to get rid of her.

Yep...the "Do Not Call" list has been a spectacular find for me.  Five years ago, I used to get tons of calls from telemarketers.  Only get one of two a month now.

If you get a ton of junk mail and flyers and other stuff you don't want in your mailbox, there's a solution for that as well.

There's a similar "Do Not Mail" list offered by the Direct Marketing Association that can reduce the amount of junk mail you get by roughly 75%.

I'll be getting right on that list. The less junk mail, the better it is for the environment too. I knew about the DNC but not the mailing version. Thank you!

Re: Do Not Call List

Just a riminder to all, the NDC list is good for only 5 years.

I signed up when it first came out, over 5 years ago. Several months ago I signed up again for another 5 years. Several months ago I recall reading about a proposed law that would allow you to sign up for a DNC list for life, but don't nkow if that law ever passed.

Imagine, not having to do it every 5 years? What will Congress think up next?

Thanks for the information. :) That's a strange arrangement isn't it? I didn't know you had to sign up again. Why they didn't make it a permanent thing the first time around is crazy. I think we've only been on it three years but it's one thing I'd gladly do again. The only thing worse than getting telemarketer calls must be having to do that as a job every day.

LOL... The Wisdom of Congress. It's just like the tax cuts that were passed a few years ago; they are scheduled to expire in 2010...The Wisdom of Congress as well as a Telemarketing industry that makes hefty contributions to many election campaigns.

What tax cuts are you referring to there, micharch? Tell me more please. No prizes for guessing they won't be business ones that are affected.

Re: Do Not Call List

That's a barrel load of good advice, thank you all! :) Can I add one more thing? The Junkbusters Anti-Telemarketing Script. They won't call back often after that.
I don't even speak half the time to say I'm there and that unnerves them so much they hang up or think the line's acting up.

I do the silent treatment too, purplerain.
This article recommends adding your cell phone to the DNC list on top of your landline. There were some new rules added last Dec about making an opt out easier to a recorded message. Isn't putting the receiver down faster? LOL
