I think they are an unneeded expense. Why spend all your money on them? Diapers when they really need them are enough. I was reading about a woman who's budgeting $1500 for diapers until her daughter doesn't need them anymore. The recession is making parents think twice about buying training pants.
These days, an accident here and there has become an acceptable tradeoff for saving some $30 to $100 a month. And many parents say that doing away with the crutch has had an added benefit: surprisingly quick toilet training.
Great point there, Carly. I didn't myself. My mother told me that kids needed to be wet and uncomfortable to want to learn potty training. That sentence made it sound worse than it was LOL. I couldn't have afforded them at that price.
I think training pants do the opposite of what they're supposed to. They encourage the child to use them like a diaper. Wet pants are part of training them! I know that's not the most pleasant thing to deal with. It comes with the parenting job.

But they are convenient when the last thing you want is for them to have an accident. If I was going to a wedding I wouldn't take the risk of them dirtying their nice clothes. They cost too much to use constantly I think.

I did. They do add up though, sometimes they are more expensive than diapers.
To save money I'd suggest both buying the cheapest brand you can, and not using them until your child is fully ready to begin training.
If you would be wealthy, think of saving as well as getting.
