I just know you all will have good ideas on how I can celebrate on a budget. One of our neighbors suggested we have a block BBQ last night on the day. He's volunteered his yard for setting up in. What can I make that will look good and not spend a bundle on?

Re: Frugal Fourth of July ahead!

I think cupcakes are versatile..you can make them then decorate 1000s of ways. What if you made cupcakes with blue icing, and a star on top of  them(can make that with white icing or fondant) and a row with white icing on other ones,,then red ones in a row, this way ,the way you postion them will look like a flag.
Kinda a easy projects that kids could do also.
Also  you can find hard candy and place in 3 bowls,,all blue wrapped candy one is red and one is white.I think you can find these like in the bulk dept in your grocer,,just any candy thats hard(since it will be sitting outside).I think Jolly Ranchers has these colors.Hope this helps ya some,,let me know what you made!

You could also be lazy like me and buy the cupcakes ready made then all you need to do is decorate them. That's a great idea on the candy, Donna! It'll keep the bugs off too. I saw some great big plastic bowls with stars and  stripes on them at the dollar store yesterday and I think they were $2. They would look brilliant filled with candy like that.

This is a twist on the 4th of July cupcake theme - Lady Liberty cupcakes. You could see who can do the best impression with these torches LOL.

I like salads, all kinds - fruit and veg. I'll see what fancy ways I can find to make them that aren't expensive, cookiefan. :)

Everybody stay safe now with those fireworks. I can't enjoy them unless I'm at a big display. I'm always scared a kiddie will get hurt in a backyard. Why is it always the most drunk guy that wants to light them?! Even sparklers will burn a youngster that's not old enough to know you don't grab it when it's hot.
I've not been to that site before. Thanks for the link, Kay. I like all the ideas we've had so far. :)

While I was drooling over Bob's bean salad I saw this dessert. Cookiefan, this looks good and wouldn't work out too high a cost per serving. It's easy and fast to make.

What a great dessert! I scope out the desserts before the main course LOL. There's a whole page of red, white and blue recipes here. The sun-dried tomato and roasted red pepper dip sounds fantastic.

I love all the extras like chips and dip.Big bags of chips, four loaves of French bread and however many tubs of dip you want plus homemade coleslaw or potato salad makes a good selection. What happens is too many bring the burgers and stuff and there's not enough of the sides to go round. Fix a price in your mind of what you want to spend and stick with that.

This is off topic but watch out for those holiday price hikes at the gas stations too and get there today if you can to fill up what you'll all need over the weekend. That bugs me so much! I make a point of going days before a national holiday so I don't get caught in that trap.

Good point, Zoey. I could eat everything in this thread LOL. Potatoes are very cheap right now cookiefan, here anyway.Ours are only $2.99 for a 10 pound bag of Russets locally. I'd make a giant batch of potato salad instead of coleslaw and take along that and pasta salad.

I'll be laying back here most of the PM. I'll be the guy in the cowboy hat with a Shiner Bock in his right hand.

A belated Happy 4th of July to everybody! Did you all have a good day? I don't think I stopped eating from when I opened my eyes.

I did, thanks greenmachine. For once it wasn't too hot to enjoy and even the flies stayed away from the BBQ. :)

My allergies were so bad I hid indoors for most of it. The day was good apart from that. I was very, very lazy and feel refreshed because I was a layabout. :)

Re: Frugal Fourth of July ahead!

Now I want cookies and ice cream! I don't think I've had that since I was a kid. It would be good if you could get the cookies with the colored M and M's in them....my brain's not working and I can't think of the  brand.

This year I plan to have no plans because when it's just us, it doesn't cost a king's ransom. It's when we get dragged into family parties that we spend a bundle. I'm not doing it again.

Re: Frugal Fourth of July ahead!

Well we had been arranging a get together with my sister and her family, but her boy's got chickenpox so that's all up in the air now. Maybe I could coax her to bring me the food over anyway and just drop it off LOL. I was looking forward to not cooking and just buying the desserts.
