Do any of you know of a cheap mosquito repellent that works? A can of Off is getting so expensive.  I tried cheap ones before and wasted my money. I need something with DEET in it or it's not strong enough. I hate the smell of Off on my skin too and it costs me a fortune over summertime, but I react badly to them and can't not wear it when I'm gardening. .

It stinks, doesn't it? No wonder the mosquitos don't want to take a bite of you LOL.
I think lemon grass would be much nicer. You can grow Thai lemon grass very fast and rub the stalks on your skin according to this page.

It contains something very similar to citronella oil, it's a safe and natural insect repellent that's just as effective as the commercial chemical products, especially when it's fresh. In fact lemon grass is more effective than true citronella.

Rubbing the long, grassy leaves on the skin worked well, but the stalk worked even better. Take one stalk of fresh lemon grass (grip it near the ground and give it a sharp sideways tug to break it off from the clump), peel off the outer leaves, snap off the grass blades behind the swollen stem at the base. Bend the stem between your fingers, loosening it, then rub it vigorously between your palms so that it fractures into a kind of fibrous juicy mass, and rub this mess over all exposed skin, covering thoroughly at least once. Pleasant on the skin and effective: 98% protection at the Beach House at sundown, 100% any other time, and the effect lasts about 4-5 hours. In most places, where the mosquitoes are less fanatical, you can use less and it'll last longer.

It reports too that catnip is better at deterring mosquitoes than DEET.

I saw an ad on the Weather Channel today for a new Off Clip-On mosquito repellent, Kay. It clips on your belt so you wouldn't need to spray anything on your skin. You can also leave it on the table. There's a fan that circulates the repellent. This is the official page. You might get a good introductory price on that somewhere with it being a new product.

What about lighting citronella candles or tiki torches with the citronella scented fluid? I find they do a good job of keeping them away when we're out on the porch.

I did miss it, Zoey. Nice catch! :) Though the savings up to $5 line tells me they won't be very cheap to run. I guess when you're only outside in short bursts it would be okay.

Thanks. :) You know it could even be cheaper than the spray because you put that on no matter how long you're going to be outside. If it turns out to be only half an hour you're not getting your money's worth out of how long it would normally last. At least you could turn this off and save the rest for another day.

I couldn't wear that on a belt. I wouldn't want a cloud of mosquito repellent wafting near my BBQ. And wherever the food is, that's where I'll be! LOL.

Some more planting options here for you, Kay.

I knew rabbits didn’t like marigolds but not mosquitoes. I think they’re dead ugly plants. My husband thinks they are beautiful LOL. Go figure. I plant one or two to please him.

The clipon's a good idea. You'd have fun explaining to your guests why you were sporting an air freshener like an accessory. That's what it looks like! :)

Thanks frazzledmom. I'll find out how much lemon grass would be. That sounds much more appealing than DEET. :)

Thanks pennywise for pointing that out! I'd not seen that ad yet. I'll see how much they are with the coupon. That would be good for the days I need to take the dogs out at the crack of dawn. I don't know how keen I'd be on sitting it on a table though.

Tried them, and they weren't very effective. We have trees everywhere so I probably have more than most. Thanks for the idea though! :)
Cookiefan, thanks for the other plants too. If I can't find the lemon grass I know marigolds are plentiful. :)

This may sound crazy but it works fairly well.  Listerine.  I buy a big bottle
and put it in a spray bottle.  I spray my cloths and even the area around where
I am working in the garden.  It doesn't seem to hurt the plants.  It only works
for about 20 to 30 minutes, but I just keep the spray bottle with me and
keep spraying.

Skin So Soft is a mystery as to why it works but it does! My friend told me that before and I didn't believe her. I was wrong. It does. The original scented body mist spray is lovely.

Nice to meet you Lynda! Listerine, really? I can't stand the smell of that so I don't blame the mosquitoes LOL. Welcome aboard. :)

Re: Inexpensive mosquito repellent?

Yuck, Listerine makes me gag too. I'd be glad to squirt that around and see the mosquitos get a mouthful of it. Nice to meet you, Lynda and thank you for the tip! I hope you enjoy it here. :) Do you dilute it or is it safe to use on clothes straight out the bottle? I wouldn't want to ruin anything.

Thanks for the tip, Lynda. Good to meet you. :) I'll try that instead of the tiki torches and candles. The vapors can get quite strong. I would think Listerine would be less so. It will keep the porch minty fresh too LOL.
