Put the plug in the sink!

I was washing my hands in the bathroom sink earlier and thinking about how to save money on the water bill when it was right under my nose. I never put the plug in the sink when I wash my hands. I always do them under running water but you use a lot less when you put the plug in and run a few inches to wash them before rinsing your hands. A small Eureka moment and it probably won't pay for a cruise LOL but every little counts. I told everyone else off and said to use the plug but found out I'm the only guilty party that didn't. Oops.

LOL, oops Savannah. I always lather up in a sinkful of water and rinse afterwards. I also use an aerator which helps. My biggest savings are in less water in the bath. I had them up to my chin and don't need that.

Re: Put the plug in the sink!

Good idea. There are many, many easy ways to save water and we could all do a bit more to help our planet. Here are a few.

#1 Drink your whisky straight, neat !

#2
When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.

  • #3
Some refrigerators, air conditioners and ice-makers are cooled with wasted flows of water. Consider upgrading with air-cooled appliances for significant water savings.
  • #4
Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street.
  • #5
Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
  • #6
Choose shrubs and groundcovers instead of turf for hard-to-water areas such as steep slopes and isolated strips.
  • #7
Install covers on pools and spas and check for leaks around your pumps.
  • #8
Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost vegetable food waste instead and save gallons every time.
  • #9
Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful.

I burst out laughing at that being top of the list, micharch ROFL. What, no ice either??

Fast showers where you get in, get washed and get out. That's my best tip. I could happily stand in there until I was as shrivelled as a raisin before. Water costs too much to be doing that.

And do it once the sun's gone down or isn't up yet. You won't lose any moisture so easily through evaporation in the cooler times of the day and when the soil's not being baked by the sun. Better still, get a rain barrel and gather all the freebie rainwater.

Thanks for the extra tips, micharch!

Bringmeroses, another I heard was to jump in the shower and get wet, turn it off while you're soaping yourself and all that, then back on to rinse off. I don't especially like that idea because I'm a raisin type and get cold easily. Money's money though!

Wouldn't it use more water/power having to turn it back on and readjust the temperature all over again? Mine's is connected to my taps. I don't know. I wouldn't want to do that. I have heard some put their houseplants in there while waiting for the water to get to the right temperature. Now that's multitasking. :)

How long does their shower take to warm up, for goodness sake? LOL. They must be fast with getting the plants in and out. I couldn't do that. Ours mine goes from cool to roasting hot in seconds. My plants would be scalded.

In fact, I probably need to find where the thermostat is on the tank and get it turned down. I'm not into that get wet>turn off>lather>turn on>rinse idea. I don't want to stand with my teeth chattering in the bathroom. Give me a constant hot shower instead please. :)

Re: Put the plug in the sink!

I read today that turning off the water when brushing your teeth saves three gallons a day. I'm going to do that to offset it and keep enjoying my fast showers without any jumping in and out. :)

I like how you think LOL. I tried the turning off and on the shower, I really did! But it wasn't for me. You've made me feel less guilty about not taking that on board. Thanks! :)
