I'm in search of cheap stocking stuffers for my kids this holiday season.
It's funny how expensive those tiny items can be!
Any ideas?

I might get a "bah humbug" for this, but I tend to look for a few filler items that we would end up buying anyway for other reasons.   Things like socks, underwear, stocking caps, gloves, etc.  Then you can still put a generous amount of "good stuff" in the stocking above and below the filler.    CVS and Walgreens always have cool candy and interesting knick-knacks under $1 each.

Or, you can get creative.  Fill up part of the stocking with a box that has a "clue" in it that leads them to another clue somewhere in the house, and then to another, then to the "prize".  Lots of fun, and the clue trail costs nothing.

Would love to hear other ideas...great question!

Hello all!
My name is Cassanda, or Cassie for short
:)

I always head to the dollar store for my family. I have a 16 year old daughter, 14 year old daughter, and 2 year old son. And my husband even though he isn't a kid. LOL.
For the girls I grab tons of girly-girl of things for under a buck. Lipglosses, trial size shower gels, lotions and potions, shower puffs, tea light candles, stationary, pens, etc.
For the two year old I'm planning on getting some arts and crafts supplies, stickers. cheap toys, stickers, coloring books and small stuffed animals.
My husbands a little trickier (and costs the most when it comes to stocking stuffers), but I can pick up cheap office supplies like sticky note pads, pens and dry erase markers. Then i usually pick up shaving cream, razors, toothpaste and toothbrushes from the drugstores

I love the clue idea! That's very cool. :) I'm a fan of stuffing the stocking with Christmas candy, especially the ones you get that are in a Christmas mug. You'll only pay a dollar for those in the dollar store and they are fairly bulky. What age are the kids, Mike?

Hi Cassie, lovely to meet you and welcome to billeater.com. :D You had some great suggestions there! I think the dollar stores are a real treasure trove at this time of year for fillers. Those and clearance shelves LOL. My question is this, who gets your stocking filled up? Sounds like you do all the work. :)

All those travel size goodies you get when you're going on vacation can make great stocking stuffers. Also watch out for something you can buy in bulk and split between all the stockings. They are cheaper than buying individual items. The dollar store is the place to be and clearance aisles for them. If you have girls, hair accessories are very popular like new hairbands and clips. The dollar store ones are dirt cheap.

If you've got nerves of steel, holding off until the last minute to buy can net you bargains that are stocking stuffer size that are normally a higher price. The stores want to clear out as much of their Christmas stock as possible and you can see big cuts on Christmas Eve. You have to have the patience to stand in long lines too.

When you go to the smaller stores you can get lucky on the queues. I've seen Walmart queued out and walked out leaving my stuff behind. Okay, I might pay a little more. Time saved is worth it at this time of year.

If you ain't ready by now, then you've only got yourself to blame if you have to stand in long lines. It's not like it falls on a different day each year LOL.  I refused to not be on top of it this year and am blissfully free to do what I want today. :) I think...
