CHICAGO, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Toys "R" Us [TOY.UL] will offer its shoppers a layaway plan to buy holiday gifts and pay over an extended period of time, the toy retailer said on Monday.
Under the plan, which covers bigger ticket items from bicycles to play kitchens, infant cribs and car seats, customers must make a deposit of 20 percent of the total purchase, including taxes, and pay a $10 service charge.
Toys "R" Us Chief Executive Jerry Storch said in a statement that the program gives flexibility to consumers whose household budgets are still under pressure, allowing them to make smaller payments over time.
The merchandise is available within seven to 10 days of the final payment, so any items must be paid for in full by Dec. 6, Toys "R" Us said. A fee will apply to canceled layaway orders.

I know Kmart and Walmart used to do layaway too. Do they still offer that? I don't remember them charging a service or cancellation fee.

Kmart does but Walmart discontinued their layaway service. Seeing Toys R Us introduce it might coax them to bring it back.

Sears also does layaway and you can start the process online by choosing what you want and selecting layaway at the checkout.  Pay $15 or 20% down.
Check it out here.

I got a flyer in from Fred's yesterday. There was a corner banner they did layaway and it's only 10% down.

That was all I saw. No more info, sorry.

I looked at Fred's website to see if they have any more information on the layaway program. If they have, I couldn't find it. I guess we just need to ask about that in the store.

I wish more stores would have Christmas clubs instead of just layaway where you could add a little every week when you go shopping. I'd be more likely to do that because it would be a longstanding habit I'd get into. Layaway is a good option but could be better if started even a month sooner.

I know it. I can remember my mom collecting Green Shield stamps and that wasn't yesterday. Something like that would be good to bring back.

Yes! I don't know why they ever fell out of favor. My mother saved them too. She used to be delighted when the page was filled up. I think that's the difference that makes you keep doing it - you can see it building up into something.

Right. In my brain I know I could go to the bank and put away money every week too. I'd not do that though. Stamps make it more interesting, let's face it. Even though that might sound silly, it does. And as you say you get the pleasure of seeing a page or savings book/card completed.
