I know they say you should plant shrubs and bushes close to help keep the air conditioning costs down. Any idea on what type works? I want to try that.
Ask them too about how fast it grows. If your shrubs are only going to be ten inches tall in three years time that's not going to help much.

Air conditioners should also be shaded from mid-morning through evening. Prune branches to allow at least several feet clearance around the air conditioning equipment to encourage air flow. Shrubs should not be planted near the air conditioner or they will reduce air flow and cooling efficiency.
Shrubs and trees are totally different though...
But it makes sense to plant leafy trees on the south side for shade in the hot summer months and sunlight during the cold after leaves fall off. Conifers on the north side to protect for northeastern storms.
Yeah they are totally different, and Savannah did say shrubs. The article covers both. Planting seems like too much work to me. You might be moved by the time they grow enough. Isn't there another way?

Would a fence panel be practical maybe?

The main thing is to pick a plant that's suited to your planting zone, Savannah. You'll need something that's bushy rather than spindly or sparse. The idea is to create a wall of protection. Anything too delicate won't cut it. I'm not sure what to suggest since I don't know what zone you're in. Try your local garden center and ask for advice there too.
