The kids don't have time to wear out stuff before they outgrow it plus I've always been bad about keeping an expensive outfit "for a special occasion". Then when I try it on again, it never fits! That's why I'm asking. There's boxes and boxes of clothes in the loft that were too good to throw out. Should I try selling them? But I've no idea how to price things or go about it. Help, please.

Re: Would you buy second hand clothes?

Hi Savannah, welcome to billeater.com! :)I love thrift stores and yard sales. I head straight for the books and stuff rather than clothes but would buy something I liked, sure!

Do you have space to have a yard sale? It's not really the season just now for that but if you get the pricing done now and keep it all ready for the better weather coming in, all you'll need to do is lay the items out on long tables or hang it on rails. You'll be ahead of the game when everyone else starts thinking about having one.

Get yourself a roll of sticky labels and an honest friend that will help you not overprice things. Don't think too hard about what you paid for it! Keep in mind that every penny you make selling something is a penny it wasn't making gathering dust in the loft. If you get even a tenth of what you paid originally, you'd be a superstar seller.

People expect to haggle with you -it's part of the fun. Keep a sense of humor and don't set the price in stone or too high or you'll never get rid of the stuff. You don't want to have to pack it all up again at the end of the day. Remember, they want bargains they can brag about and you want to make some money. Good luck!

Thanks for all the help! I've asked my best friend to give me a hand and she wants to do it as well! We're both pack rats and decided it would work best having a joint yard sale. With her yard probably having more traffic passing by than mine, that's where it will be. After Christmas we'll start sorting everything out. She'll be so mean going through my stuff, I know it LOL.

But mean is good! Your friend will keep you from getting too carried away about how much you spent on it the first time round. This article on how much to charge for yard sale items gives good guidance on how to calculate it. I'd say it's still a bit on the high side but it does make a excellent point about things that are of sentimental value. Be absolutely sure you want to part with them.

I buy secondhand things all the time. When it's for the kids I'm more choosy than for myself. Shoes are always on my list for them and you can get good pairs at thrift stores and yard sales. Most kids are like mine where they grow like weeds before they wear them out. I pass theirs on to my family's kids if they can use them.

I've noticed a trend in more "fashionable" secondhand clothes. Some companies are even catering to youth and teenagers. Try http://www.platoscloset.com/
