Some people will do anything! What happening in Colorado is the buyer hands over a fake $50 bill to pay for something and pockets the change, which is real and what they really wanted.
Grand Junction police are warning yard sale operators to be on the lookout for counterfeit money, especially $50 bills.
Police said in a news release Tuesday there have been at least five incidents in the last two weeks in which someone has used the fake bills to purchase items at yard sales and received change from the seller.
I guess it would depend on how willing the seller was to take it. I wouldn't be unless I had one of those marker pens you can use to check bills.
Most small stores aren't happy to even take a $50 bill, never mind a yard sale. That's just asking for trouble. Who goes to a yard sale without small notes and plenty of change anyway?

I thought that too frazzledmom. Even if you have $50 you wouldn't let a stallholder know it. You get more when you plead poverty LOL.
It must have been inexperienced vendors he approached to catch with that. I wouldn't change a $50 note. I don't see them often enough to even know what a fake looks like compared to the genuine article.
Not that I justify theft from corporations or businesses, but there's something that seems "Worse" about scamming and ripping off individuals and families.
That is so sad.
Edit: Although, I'd be a little freaked out if somebody tried to pay me with a fifty dollar bill at a garage sale anyways
Note to self: Keep a counterfeit pen handy next time I host a yard sale...

I agree Carly. Let's face it. When we're having a yard sale, we need the money. Otherwise we would have just thrown it all out. I'm not condoning it either but big corporations have insurance for that kind of thing too.
Wow, its amgazing how selfish some people can be.
Obviously, anybody that is going to part with any of their possesions, and take the time preparing and getting up early on a weekend needs the extra cash to get by!

I did not know that they allowed $50 bills @ garage sales. I never saw more than a $5 bill pass hands around here. Maybe we have low-grade items in our neighborhood.
