5 Ways to Keep Your Family within a Budget

With the economy still on very shaky ground, it’s more important than ever for people to learn how to live within a budget. However, there is a big problem with budgets – they’re like diets. And just like when you see that gooey jelly donut in the window of the bakery and your diet goes out the window, your budget will go out the window you see those “adorable” shoes which you simply “must have” or that new tablet computer. So how do you figure out how to actually stick with a budget?

A lot of this has to do with the fact that you are now far more independent than you used to be and this costs money. There are new friendships and more than a couple of parties to attend. Study takes a lot of your time which means it is not practical to have a full time job.Read the rest...

Hands Down, the Smartest Investment for Young Adults

There are many different options out there, from stocks and bonds to real estate to business investment opportunities. But none of these options for investing pays the same dividends as a college education. Many young people today, however, enter the workforce rather than pursue a college education. They assume they can't afford a postsecondary education in the current economy.Read the rest...

Your College Education: Do You Get What You Pay For?

Schools that top the list for four-year graduates also top the list for cost, competition, and prestige. The most successful graduation ratio belongs to Harvard, where 97% of students who enroll graduate on time.[1] Comparatively, schools that are easier to get into—and easier to pay for—more often than not round out the bottom of the graduate list with fewer than 60% of freshmen who graduate in four years.[2]Read the rest...

What to Look For in a 529 Plan

Each state has its own 529 plan, but since there are no residency restrictions, an investor in Texas can sign up for the California-sponsored 529 plan, for example. With 50 different states to compare, an investor can face a challenge in picking the right plan. Because there are also no income limits and a wide-range of eligible education expenses, every person may be able to benefit in some way from a 529.Read the rest...

Bridesmaid on a Budget: How to Cope with a Costly Wedding

Always the bridesmaid and always broke? It is no wonder with the average bridesmaid spending close to $1,700 based on a 2010 study. Expenses including dresses, shoes, jewelry, travel, lodging, and the bridal shower can really add up. Of course, not all brides choose the most expensive of everything, but there is really no way to know when asked to be in a wedding.

When you accept, you are accepting not only the duty and responsibility, but the financial burden as well. While you may be more than willing to do these things for your friend, there is no reason to go into debt for a wedding that is not even yours. If you cannot afford it and you know it, say so politely. You may get an offer for help, but if not, walk away with your checkbook intact. Of course, if this is your sister asking you, saying no is a lot harder.Read the rest...

For many couples, the choice to move in together is partly based on the idea of saving more money by sharing expenses. While two people living in the same house is not the same as one person, by sharing the cost of rent, utilities, furniture and other similar expenses, two people living together ultimately can save more money.Read the rest...

Name Brands on a Generic Budget

Now, I love saving money, but there are certain items that I just don’t want to purchase from a knock-off producer. I want the real thing, and anything less is unacceptable. Unfortunately, my high-class tastes don’t mind that my wallet has high-class amounts of money in it. Even though I won’t settle for generic, I’m still on a budget. What’s a girl to do?

Creative Mulching: Five Free Mulches for Your Garden

The benefits of mulching your vegetable garden are nearly endless. Organic mulches provide nutrients for the soil while they help keep necessary moisture from evaporating into the air. Using an average of two inches of mulch through the middle and late summer months can reduce your need for watering by more than half. The natural fertilizers in organic mulch help promote plant growth without the use of chemical fertilizers. A layer of mulch will protect the soil against erosion, and it will draw feeder roots up toward the rich surface where they will provide more nutrition for the plants.Read the rest...

These five kids have all created their own successful businesses before the age of 20. The companies range from hair care products to popular gaming apps. What they all have in common is a good idea and the ability to follow through with that idea until it eventually pays off. Most of these kids will earn enough money in their teens to pay for their college education - as soon as they're old enough to go off to school.Read the rest...

Five Tips to Manage Family and Personal Finance

While some parents do a great job of teaching their kids how to handle money, many people have to learn money management skills on their own. This can create some painful situations when the adult child is financially secure and the parents are financially unstable. Emotional bonds can make financial decisions even more difficult in these situations.Read the rest...

Advertisers have us believing that newborns need a lot of costly items like state-of-the-art strollers and intelligence-enhancing crib gadgets. Let’s be honest, in some circles, baby accoutrements are the new status symbols. The truth, however, is that babies, especially in their first couple of years, require very little. So, it’s time to eschew any baby-related pretence and uncover the secret of clutter-free, affordable baby rearing.Read the rest...

It doesn't take much to make an Easter Sunday special for the whole family. Almost any decorations that celebrate spring will add to the fun of the day. Cut flowers from your own garden can be some of the best decorations, and they will not cost you anything extra at all. If you are celebrating with children, you can have them help you create imaginative new decorations using common arts and crafts tools.Read the rest...

One thing that has changed the most is how the family pays for the wedding. It’s not automatically up to the bride’s father anymore, nor are other costs covered the same way they use to be. Today's bride has more control over her wedding choices, because she has more control over wedding finances.Read the rest...

The definition of the best pillow can vary from person to person. Some people prefer pillows that their heads can sink into, while others like a little more support when they sleep. No matter what you personally like best, there are pillows of every shape and category that rise to the top of the list. The following five pillows range from foam to down, and they represent the highest quality pillows on the market today.
Healthy Home Cleaning Guide: Resolve to Save Hundreds on Cleaning Products this Year

Many ways of saving money help reduce waste and pollution. One is to use only natural cleaning products. Not only is it good for the earth and your wallet, but it’s also healthier for your family. The chemicals left behind by many household cleaners can contribute to illness in those with sensitive systems. Using natural cleaners gives you one less danger to worry about.

Money-saving Tips for the New Year: Declutter Now, Sell Later

Many jobs offer extra time off during December so that everyone can enjoy the holidays with family. You've probably been putting off the deep cleaning until you have more time, right? The extra time you are given in late December is perfect for clearing out all of that stuff you've been meaning to get rid of. The weather at the end of the year also cooperates with cleaning out the house. It is usually cold and rainy, so you are stuck inside anyway. You can make a game out of clearing each room one day at a time while you are waiting for the weather to get better.Read the rest...

Can getting more sleep save you money? Probably!

Even if you are spending those sleepless hours working from home, the extra money you make now will probably not be enough to cover the expensive problems that can result from sleep deprivation. Forgetfulness, overeating, falling asleep at work, and many other symptoms can be tough on your finances eventually. Taking the time to make sure you get plenty of rest at night will make you more productive at work.Read the rest...

Romantic, No Longer practical, But Still Neat-O Ways to Save money

The more difficult it is to make ends meet, the more drastic the money-saving ideas tend to be. Just a few decades ago, everyone made the majority of their food on their own. Wouldn't it be nice to go back to the days of growing your own vegetables and drinking fresh milk from your own dairy cow? The idea is really impractical in our modern age, but it's fun to imagine.Read the rest...

You’ll probably keep the important ones you need, and throw the rest away. However, this practice could be tainting your money and the other items that encounter your receipts with BPA. Bisphenol A, abbreviated as BPA, has been found to have the potential to cause a number of health issues such as cancer and possible birth defects in developing fetuses and young children.Read the rest...

This is seen in pop culture that engulfs large cities, such as Los Angeles and New York just as much as it can be seen in more traditional rural areas. In short, computers are taking over. You are told one thing promising cheap prices only to have the final total to ring up double or even triple what you originally thought. Context and word placement are everything. For those who pay a fee for every bag taken to the curb, it can be a great way to save money. Saving on the cost of trash bags and trashcans can also put a little extra money in your pocket. A good deal isn't simply a low price. It also includes the value of a product. The value of a product depends greatly on how it is seen by consumers on an individual basis. Usually, the price and value of a product tends to meet somewhere in the middle. When you are shopping, think about value. This is how to find the best deals.Read the rest...

During this time, the festival was called Samhain. It was celebrated on November 1 to mark the start of a new year as the Celtic calendar was not the same as the calendar that we use today. Halloween is a fun and cherished holiday for children and often adults alike and can be made even better with the creativity and craftiness that frugal living brings.

They couldn’t use the door because the space was piled to the ceiling with hoarded stuff. Earlier this year, an El Paso, Texas woman died by fire when the newspapers she had hoarded fed the flames. Think about how much you spend on clothing at department stores. For every $100 you spend at a department store, you can find $1,000 - $4,000 worth of clothing second hand. Suddenly, that $500 you need to put aside for your clothing budget shrinks to $50. To be a smart shopper and keep money in your pocket, check out secondhand products.Read the rest...

Living on One Income: How to Make it Work

Even in the best of financial times, living on one income is a challenge. From necessities like food, shelter, clothing, medical bills, transportation, and taxes to "wants" like entertainment and leisure, the drains on a family's financial resources are many.

This is especially true in this American society built upon conspicuous consumption. Living frugally can seem impossible and unfair, especially when it seems that so many other people live wasteful lives. How does a family manage not only to survive, but to prosper with only one income?

In fact, it’s the culprit in about 50% of the marriages that fail. This problem stems from the fact that in most relationships, there is a “spender” and a “saver.” Without proper communication, these two personalities can clash, leading to arguments, stress and unfortunately divorce. Most psychologists agree that having a financially healthy relationship begins before couples tie the knot, and the following tips and ideas can help couples get on and stay on the same page regarding money.Read the rest...

How do you do it?

Making your own detergent isn’t all that difficult. All you need is one bar of your favorite soap, one box of washing soda, one box of borax a five-gallon bucket. It only takes a few minutes of your time and many people swear by it. Still, I've got a few more questions about it.
How to Un-Spoil Your Kids

Our kids would never believe it, but we hate saying no to them. And some of us give in to that feeling a little too often. Our kids begin to expect more and more. They think they need those expensive toys advertised on TV and the clothes they see in music videos. As parents, we need to be vigilant and say no to overpriced goodies and unnecessary baubles. It’s a part of teaching our kids to be smart, self-sufficient adults who can afford to live the life of their dreams. Saying no to little things now is saying yes to happiness later.Read the rest...

FTC Aims to Teach Children to Resist Advertsing Messages

In many cases, it is beneficial to both consumers and competing businesses. Consumers get needed information to select which products to purchase and use. Businesses can draw benefits from advertising by measuring what customers want and innovating in order to stay one step ahead of their competitors.

As children are increasingly becoming a large part of the marketplace, they are also targeted by advertising and marketing campaigns. This makes them likely to see advertisements in many different places. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has started a creative campaign to educate kids between the ages of 8 to 12 about advertising and how to develop critical thinking skills when seeing ads in just about every part of their daily lives.
When Your Child Needs a Financial Education After College

But has the academic experience prepared your child for the demands of life that awaits them? If you shield your children from the difficulties they will most certainly face after college, you won't be doing them any favors.

The truth is that the students in college today have fewer job prospects than ever before. According to a study from the Economic Policy Institute, the unemployment rate for college graduates under 25 is around 9.0%, compared to 5.4% 20071. What can you do to prepare your kids for the harsh realities of fewer jobs, weakened earning potentials, and higher living expenses? Its never too late to begin their financial education.Read the rest...

Well, now you can, at least until your child nears pre-teen. Sears has a program that few know about, even though it has been around for a while. It's the KidVantage program.

Spring has finally arrived indicating it is time to pack up the winter wear and bring out warm weather clothes. Most kids grow so fast that last seasons gear is not going to fit the bill for the coming summer. You may be working with a limited budget or find it wasteful to pay top dollar prices for items that will only be worn for a few months. In either case it helps to know you can save a lot of money by purchasing gently used second hand clothes. The following tips will ensure you are getting a good deal.
Here are some simple tips to save money on clothes for work.

Take Inventory of Existing Clothes

Before heading to the shops to purchase new clothes take a trip into your closet and make an inventory of items. This way you will see what should be purchased and you may be surprised at the available outfits that are hiding in there. If there is a definite glut of black pants hanging up, then when shopping steer clear of the black pants rack.Read the rest...

In our society there are so many rules and expectations that it is sometimes difficult to know what is expected when it comes to gratuities. Who gets them and how much is appropriate? In some cases it is quite obvious who gets a tip, however in other situations the lines become blurred. It is important to know when a tip is expected and how much should be given to save money during your day-to-day outings. Here we look at some common issues surrounding tipping, reducing confusion and saving you more money.

Moving is an exciting time but it also comes with a lot of stress. Extra financial burdens are also added in to the mix and when there are unexpected expenses, it can make the entire situation much less fun.

Moving can get expensive because there are so many things to take care of at the same time. Here are some tips to help your move go smoothly and be a frugal adventure to the start of a new life:

Plan Well in Advance
There are a lot of different aspects to a move. You need to sit down and create a list of to-do items so you’ll not risk missing something during the process that may end up costing you a fortune.Read the rest...

How to Save on Childcare

The tough thing about childcare is that this is the most important decision you can make – to whom do you entrust your most precious treasures? And how can you possibly complain about the expense?

It’s important to remember is that the only thing that matters with childcare is quality. Many times a higher price is indicative of quality, but like many consumer goods and services, this is not universally true.

In fact, many high-quality, in-home childcare providers will charge only a nominal fee to supplement their household income. These are the ones you want to find; they’re providing childcare because they want to—it’s not a business for them. Read the rest...

How Losing Weight Saves You Money

Two of life’s most difficult problems: Losing weight and saving money. However, if you combine these two goals into one effort, you might just be able accomplish both at the same time.

Save on Your Food Bill

You can make a dramatic weekly savings simply with your shopping bill. A big cause of weight problems comes from ready meals and pre-packaged goods. Start shopping more on the outer rim of the grocery store – that’s where the healthier foods are located. Snack on fruits and nuts instead of the expensive boxed and individually packaged snacks.Read the rest...

Save Thousands on Childcare with a Parenting Coop

Parents with more than one young child can find themselves paying $400 a week or more just so they can go to work. For many parents it’s cheaper to stay home than it is to work.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can get together with other parents and arrange a parenting cooperative, sometimes called a child swap, so a different parent cares for the children each day of the week. Read the rest...

Always one to decorate my home lavishly for the holidays, I even make an effort to choose wrapping paper that compliments my décor. This year, I still decked out my home out and still chose wrapping supplies that complimented the décor, but I did it cheaper by choosing my gift-wrapping carefully.
How to save money on small everyday expenses

The key to saving money is spending less of it. When most of us decide that we would like to save some cash, we look first to the biggest expenditures on our budgets: rent/mortgage, car payments, tuition, electric bills, 401K's, retirement savings and other big costs. However, you can only cut down so much on these necessary costs. Don't overlook small everyday purchases that can be eliminated altogether, purchased less often or purchased cheaper. Let the small changes add up to a big difference. Each idea that made this list is a small, subtle change that will make little, if any difference in your daily life. They are things that are easy to do, and things that you won't feel like you're "going without". Heres a few ideas...

11 ways to save money on your winter wardrobe

Winter, being the extreme season, means that it requires a different wardrobe...full of warmer clothes to keep up with the weather. Even in the warm south, they have their sub-freezing days. Logic says that warmer clothes use more material of a thicker, more durable (and pricier) fabric. And, if you have kids, last year's winter clothes won't fit, unless you have a good "hand me down" matchup. Keep cozy while keeping your wallet fuller by shopping smart for winter clothing.
Lost Your Health Insurance? Don’t Panic

In 2008, approximately 15% of the population, according to the Census Board, was without any type of health insurance. That represents approximately 46.3 million people. Most people are insured through their employee programs. Other providers are Medicare and Medicaid. What happens if you lose your benefits? If you become seriously ill or disabled, chances are that you will invest your cash in your own welfare, and spend your money on hospital charges. It happens.

If you have no insurance and need medical attention don’t be afraid to negotiate for a better price. It sounds odd to be haggling with a health care provider but it is something you have to learn how to do if your insurance disappears. When looking for new health insurance because, your policy has run out, or you have been laid off, there are several places that specialize in helping people find affordable coverage:
Part time jobs for teenagers and students

In the United States, teenagers are legally allowed to start work at sixteen years of age. And in some cases, like hardship situations, teenagers can begin working at age 15. Some students choose to only get "summer jobs", and focus their attention on academics during the school year. Either way, part-time employment for teens can be fulfilling, fun and a great hands-on learning experience.Read the rest...

As the school year comes to an end, many parents go into panic mode. The realization hits you, junior will not be going to school this morning bright and early.
Yes, its true, school is expensive. With tuition, books, the cost of dorm living, travel, and other necessities, the bill for getting a higher education stacks up. Its unfortunate to see those with lower incomes give up on their dreams because of a financial brick wall. Uncle Sam wants you to go to school, there are so many resources out there for anybody with dreams of a higher education.Read the rest...

Save money on high chairs, strollers, bouncers, baby monitors and more

Consignment stores that specialize in gently used items for babies tend to be very picky about the items they will accept, so they are a great place to find items like baby clothes, cribs, high chairs, strollers, bouncers, and baby monitors, and more. And, if you can't find a consignment store in your area, there's some great internet resources as well. Do see our special note at the bottom of this article about safety.

There's at least one national chain with local stores:

Once Upon a Child

Also check your yellow pages for local consignment and second-hand stores.

Additonally, there are some great internet resources to check ...Read the rest...

Store brand diapers ...cheaper than name brand, but are they good ?

You can save quite a bit of money by purchasing certain store brands of diapers instead of buying a brand name like Huggies, Pampers or Luvs.

Target brand diapers worked very well for us, and we weren't able to tell the difference between them and the more expensive Huggies brand.

Check out this comparison chart:

Brand Count Price Price per diaper

Pampers 88 $19.00 22.7 cents
Huggies 112 $16.99 15.1 cents
Target 112 $10.59 9.4 cents

Of course, the quality does vary, so you may have to try a few brands first.
