- Search for Discounts and Promo Codes. Try this google search for promo codes.
- Don't take their add-on insurance, LDW, etc. Usually, your existing automobile policy covers rentals. You will still be responsible for the deductible, but that's no different than driving your own car. Call your agent to make sure first, but this will save you a ton of money.
- Don't call, use websites. In most cases, you'll find the best rates online, and you can more easily compare rates.
- Rent a smaller car if you can. It can be tempting to rent a nicer car to treat yourself, but the "loss-leader" cheap rates are typically only available on the smaller cars. And, you'll get better gas mileage.
- Check the weekly rate, even if you won't have the car a week.If you are renting a car for four days, consider looking at the weekly rate. Many times, it can be cheaper than four days at the daily rate.
- Use Package deals With large online travel sites like Travelocity and Expedia, package deals that combine Air+Car, Hotel+Car, or Air+Hotel+Car are much cheaper than buying each separately.
- Check off-airport locations Renting from locations farther away from the airport will net a lower rate, and also avoid any airport mandated add-on fees.
