How To Entertain Your Kids On A Budget

Posted In:  family

Parents have been faced with the challenge of entertaining their kids for generations. Today we have more options then every before, however over the years some forms of entertainment have become quite expensive. Play time doesn't just make happy kids; spending time enjoying life together reinforces family connections making everyone more relaxed and happy. Here we will look at ways to bring your family together for some fun and entertainment without breaking the bank.

  • Get moving- Adults and kids alike will benefit by getting off the sofa and moving around. Something as simple as bike riding, hiking or other physical activities are free or low cost and available all year long. Families that enjoy outdoor or other physical activities together tend to be healthier and more fit than those who participate in more stationary activities.
  • Explore your community- Many people simply don't know the treasures that are in their own community. Check out the library for free events (in addition to books, dvd's and games) or local community centers. If you live an area where you have access to a YMCA or other community organization check out their facilities and services they offer. There may be programs right in your area that engage children as well as their parents for little or no cost. State parks are also a great resource which can be used for camping, swimming, hiking or picnicking. Do you want to learn more about the history of your community? Check out Geocaching.com for a fun treasure hunting experience the whole family can enjoy. Whatever your interests, explore your local community and discover what it has to offer.
  • Movie night- We have all heard of movie night, however you can spice it up a bit by making the evening more realistic. Print movie "tickets" from your computer or even make them by hand. Prepare snacks which can be picked up at the "snack" counter (kitchen) and settle in for a fun night with the family. This is a cheap and fun way to entertain your kids for a few hours while relaxing after a busy day.
  • Don't forget the games- Classic board games or cards can be a great way to gather the family for some fun time. If you live in an area of the country that limits outdoor time due to inclement weather, game night can be a lifesaver for kids stuck in the house. Let the kids take turns picking their game and consider having a prize for the winner. The prize doesn't have to be expensive, just a little something that encourages the kids to get in the game. When children have so many electronic gadgets to play with, a low key night of board games encourages socialization and communication among family members.

Entertaining your kids can be very costly but only if you don't know how to find low cost alternatives. Use the ideas mentioned here to jump start your own creative search for things to do that don't cost a lot of money. It is possible if you are willing to put forth the effort to look for activities and locales for your family to enjoy.
