With everyones focus on the credit crisis, recession and the millions of people that are drowning in debt it is easy to forget there is an entire portion of the population that has managed their credit cards responsibly for years. Sadly responsible credit card management has been rewarded by account holders seeing reduced credit limits, increased fees and less favorable terms.
This was not entirely unexpected as credit card companies more or less promised to make changes when the new credit card reform was passed. Nevertheless the changes affecting the accounts of credit card holders who have never missed a payment or otherwise defaulted on their agreement is enough to make anyone frustrated. Fortunately there is something you can do if you are unhappy with the way your credit card company is treating you and that is to look for a new credit card. Here are a few tips to help consumers who are in the market for a better credit card.
- Know your credit worthiness- Before you consider applying for another credit card regardless of the terms, you must first be cognizant of your own credit rating. The days of easy credit are a thing of the past and only those with excellent credit will be considered for credit cards with the most lucrative terms and conditions.
- Shop around- Another change you will find when shopping for a new card is that the terms for almost all cards are less favorable than they were just a few years ago. It is recommended you do not apply for the first card you see, rather compare many cards from many different websites before making your final decision. To avoid the problems many consumers are facing today, make sure you understand the terms and can meet the conditions. Remember introductory offers are just that, introductory so avoid cards that have great short term benefits for those that offer good long term benefits.
- Limit applications- There may be many new rules in the credit card industry but this one has not changed. Apply for one card that you feel you qualify for versus a dozen in the hopes of getting one approval. Multiple inquiries on your credit report will have a negative impact on your credit score making it difficult to qualify for the best cards.
- Picking the right rewards program- Most people who manage their credit card accounts responsibly enjoy the benefits offered by rewards programs. Rewards programs vary and many might not be very beneficial to the card holder. Understand your spending habits including amounts and locations to ensure you select a program that will build rewards you can use.
We live in changing times and there comes a point when we have to adapt to the changes around us. The credit card industry is going to continue to see changes when the rest of the rules take effect in 2010. The best advice for all credit card holders is to avoid carrying a balance and to pay close attention to any correspondence you receive from your credit card company. Anyone carrying a balance should make eliminating their debt the first priority otherwise you will continue to be at the mercy of the card companies.
