How to Have a Fun and Frugal Halloween Celebration

Halloween has a long, rich history dating back 2,000 years to the Celtic peoples living in Northwestern Europe. During this time, the festival was called Samhain. It was celebrated on November 1 to mark the start of a new year as the Celtic calendar was not the same as the calendar that we use today. Halloween is a fun and cherished holiday for children and often adults alike and can be made even better with the creativity and craftiness that frugal living brings.

 

 

During this festival, the Celtic peoples dressed up in costumes, did their best to perform fortune telling, and some even communicated with the dead as it was believed that the veil between this world and the other side was its thinnest during that time of year. As time progressed and the Romans began to invade what were once the Celtic territories, they allowed some of the pagans to continue their rituals and practices – in part, because the Romans also had a similar festival going on during that time of year. Thus, the Romans and the Celts combined their rituals to create what we now know as Halloween. 

 

 

There are plenty of fun and frugal fall and Halloween dishes. Classic fall desserts such as pumpkin pie and caramel apples can be made inexpensively and can be an excellent family get-together idea. Halloween themed ideas such as eerie eyeballs and ghoulish gravestones can also make your Halloween celebration special. If your home is frequented by trick-or-treaters, you can save money on candy costs by making your own batches of home-made candy. Not only will most kids appreciate your time and efforts but you’ll save the hassle of having to buy tons of bags of candy. 

 

 

Costumes are an integral part of every Halloween celebration. While some people like to go to party stores such as Spencer’s or Party City for their Halloween ensembles, others prefer a more homemade solution. Either way, it’s good to choose a costume that will be appropriate for whatever event you may be attending. The most frugal costume choice is always homemade. However, if sewing is not necessarily your specialty, then you may be able to pick up a gently used costume through a thrift store or a clothing consignment store. 

 

Another way to save money on Halloween costumes is to purchase a costume that is on clearance during the first week of November and use that same costume the following year. Be sure that you pick a costume that won’t go out of style that year. Classic costumes such as pirates, Greek or Roman Gods/Goddesses, and fairies have the benefit of always being in style and may be a good choice for you if your goal is to save money this Halloween. 

 

 

Trick-or-treating can be a great way for kids to celebrate Halloween and to interact with others in their communities. Most children who trick-or-treat are under 13. However, there are some exceptions. Some older children choose to trick or treat and can get away with it if they look youthful enough. As a rule of thumb, never let young children trick or treat alone and make sure that you let them know that you must inspect all of the candy that they get before they eat it. 

 

Halloween parties are an excellent way for adults and teenagers to celebrate Halloween. Halloween parties can have a variety of games. Some of the most common games include classics such as bobbing for apples. Additionally, you can choose to create your own variation of classic games such as pin the eye on the Cyclops or for a party consisting mainly of single adults, a Halloween version of truth or dare. 

 

Halloween is a fun Holiday that doesn’t have to be expensive. Saving money on basic party supplies is simple and requires only a few days of preparation. By creating your own candy or making your own costume, you’ll stand out from everyone else and won’t have to spend so much.
