Moving is an exciting time but it also comes with a lot of stress. Extra financial burdens are also added in to the mix and when there are unexpected expenses, it can make the entire situation much less fun.
Moving can get expensive because there are so many things to take care of at the same time. Here are some tips to help your move go smoothly and be a frugal adventure to the start of a new life:
Plan Well in Advance
There are a lot of different aspects to a move. You need to sit down and create a list of to-do items so you’ll not risk missing something during the process that may end up costing you a fortune.
Discuss with your family how packing will be completed in an organized manner and sketch out a timeline to follow from that moment until the actual moving date.
Set a Budget
With so much going on, it is easy to overspend during a move. It can help to take your plan outline and jot down the estimated costs of each activity so you know what you are likely to spend. With plenty of planning time, you should be able to seek out services and purchases that are priced affordably. If you end up buying on the fly, you’ll spend more than you bargained for initially. Be sure not only to account for the amount it will cost to physically move but what is required to live comfortably at the new location. Utility installation, groceries, and other necessities should be on the budgeting list to ensure you have enough cash until everything gets back to normal.
Schedule Moving Van Ahead of Time
Most people know well in advance when they are planning to move. Whether it is a local or long distance move, it is best to reserve a truck at least 4-6 weeks prior to the move date. This gives you time to comparison shop rental rates, read the contract fine print, and schedule exactly the kind of vehicle you need for the move. Otherwise, rushed decisions will lead to financial mistakes and little time to negotiate better pricing. You also need to be clear on the quotes you get so you’ll know exactly what you are paying for before being contractually bound.
Aim for a Weekday
If you are looking to save on the physical move, schedule the move during a weekday. Since most people move over a weekend, truck pricing and availability will be better Monday through Friday.
Have Patience
Moving into a new place or a new location often spurs people into thinking they need to have new everything. Put a brake on spending until you unpack and see what is actually needed. Consider that you have many years ahead of you to make your new house your home and take it step by step as you go. Otherwise your move will be overwhelming and cost you more than you can afford to spend.
