At some time in your life, you are going to need to spend money on your health. Whether it is for routine check-ups, sickness, prescriptions or chronic conditions, we all have medical expenses to pay. As prices get higher, it can get harder and harder to afford health care. Not only is the cost of the medical care and prescriptions increasing, but the cost of gas and transportation to visit your doctor or pick up your prescriptions has also made health care that little bit more expensive. The question is: how to reduce medical expenses without giving up the quality of your health care and your life?
Some recent studies have found that Americans are spending more on medical expenses than any other nationality in the world. This is due to a combination of the cost of health care and also the health, or lack thereof, of the nation. To save money on health care, there are two broad areas that need to be tackled, improving your health and finding the best quality health care for your hard earned money.
The last thing you want to do is to sacrifice the health of you and your family members in order to save some money, but here are some tips that can help you stay healthy while maintaining a budget:
- If you need a prescription, ask your doctor about any samples that may be available. All doctors receive samples of different medicines from pharmaceutical companies. These samples are provided so the doctors can have their patients try that company’s drug. As a result, you can benefit from these samples as they are free. While you may not be able to have your whole prescription covered by the samples, you will at least have part of it covered. This can quickly add up, particularly if you suffer from a chronic condition.
- When you are given a prescription, inquire about whether there is a generic drug alternative available for your particular problem. Generic drugs are no less effective than brand name drugs. They will contain the same medication as that which is found in a brand name. The reason they are cheaper comes down to the cost of making the drugs. Brand name drugs have extra costs involved, such as advertising and the like. It is these added costs that made the brand name drugs more expensive. Unfortunately, there are not generic alternatives for all drugs.
- If you have a follow-up appointment, make sure you keep it. This is particularly important for those that suffer from a chronic condition. Missing appointments may mean that your condition is actually getting worse, which can lead to even more expensive health care in the future.
- Maintain your health. Eating healthy and exercising regularly will mean you are less likely to get sick. This does not mean you have to join a gym and become super fit. All you are aiming for is regular exercise that will keep weight under control. This type of exercise is basically free, as all you need is a good pair of walking or running shoes and somewhere safe to walk or run. Taking this time with your family is also a great way to spend some quality time with loved ones while improving the health of everyone involved.
All in all, the best way to reduce your medical expenses is to live a healthy lifestyle and work closely with your doctor to find ways you can reduce your medical expenses. If you qualify for assistance programs available through the government or community, you could save hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you find you are unable to pay for necessary medical expenses. Saving money should not be the priority if it puts your health at risk.
