How to Stay Positive in the Down Economy...without being a Polyanna

Posted In:  News and Opinion

Staying Positive in a Down Economy might seem like a contradiction or something hard to achieve for many people who are going through rough times. A down economy affects all sectors of the population; it even affects people who are wealthy, as they watch their investments plummet. Although every sector suffers the effects in different degrees (some might not even have a home anymore or food), everyone has the power to adjust their attitudes toward their current situation and look for the positive inside the suffering.

This is not easy to do. Mother's hearts might be breaking when they see their kids hungry or sad. People's dreams may be crushed, husband's male egos as providers weakening ... Staying positive requires a shift in attitude, and strength of character when others around you are crumbling - but in the end, it is up to you to choose your attitude and approach to hard times.

Nevertheless, how do you do this despite everything that goes around you, including the demands and attitudes of the people that have depended on you? By realizing a big truth - this all shall pass - and by taking advantage of the new opportunities that may be around the corner. For some, losing their job might be the opportunity they were looking for to change careers, to go back and study or train for a new career, to start their own businesses, to do what they always wanted to do, but were unable because they were tied to a great job.

Tough times also offer chances to explore new interests, to do some evaluating and retrospection, which otherwise would be put aside due to a busy work schedule. It provides the time to focus on family matters, which are sometimes shoved aside due to hectic schedules and abundance. Tough times provide the opportunity to test a marriage and family bonds, and to strengthen those. It provides the opportunity to reach out to others, which might not be so lucky, and help the ones in need; it provides the time and opportunity for spiritual and personal growth. Tough times test the character, and it offers the opportunity to strengthen and build character. It offers many people an opportunity to go back to basics and reassess their life in many areas, financially, spiritually, and personal.

For many tough times will open doors, which otherwise would have never open, bringing new opportunities and change. Change that may not seem good right away, but only leading to better pastures. For others tough times will close doors on relationships that hinder growth. No one recognizes the benefits of trials and tribulations at the moment, but in retrospective, some people realized that those hard times were the catalyst they needed to produce change in their lives, which resulted in better things.

Attitude opens or closes doors, and in a down economy, a positive attitude may help you recognize opportunities in front of you. It may also help you learn some tricks on your own, some survival skills, and some budgeting skills as well.
