It's official- Everybody is cutting back on everything including the basics. However, most people would agree that feeding their family ranks high on their priorities regardless of their budget. Keeping your family healthy, happy and well fed on the cheap is quite possible, as long as you stick to your budget and think outside the box. Heres a few tips and tricks to guide you...
- Eat more veggies- In America, the portions of meat are outrageous! There is no reason that expensive meats need take up half your plate. Use meat to accent other things on your plate, or consider going vegetarian a few times a week to cut back a bit.
- Stop wasting- Did you know that even the most gourmet of restaurants use up every single morsel of food? Save your leftovers, and use every part of a vegetable or cut of meat. If done right, a whole chicken should feed a family of 4 two entire meals. Don't forget to think outside the box! Egg shells sharpen the blades on your garbage disposal, and rinds from citrus fruits control sink odors.
- Try new cuts of meat- There is no need to buy the most expensive cuts of meat like tenderloin. In fact, the cheaper cuts, cooked the right way, can be easier to cut, more flavorful, versatile and most importantly, cheaper. Try pork shoulder, flank steak and brisket. Read up on marinades and slow-cooker recipes that bring out the best in these cuts.
- Make a list-... And remember to bring it! If you write down exactly what you need before you leave the house, it will help you avoid impulse purchases and return trips.
- Find new sources of protein- Beans and eggs are a great and frugal source of protein. Try all different types of beans, and add eggs into things like salads, pastas, and casseroles to add flavor and protein on the cheap. Want to save even more money? Buy beans stored in dry packages like bags, instead of the canned variety.
- Buy in season- In-season produce is dramatically cheaper.
- Get cultured- Asian, Hispanic and other ethnic markets host aisles and aisles of exotic produce, meats, spices and dry goods for a fraction of the price that grocery chains and convenience stores market them as. Have a fun and cultural dinner by shopping here.
- Make the most of budget foods - Ramen Noodles are a great example. It's actually fun to think of new ways to spice up an old standby. Learn how to get creative with your ramen noodles by reading our article "Rockin the Ramen- Frugal Ramen Recipes"
- Use "fillers"- Pasta and rice are versatile and pick up the flavor of almost any dish for next to nothing. Add veggies and spices to stretch your dollar. The possibilities are endless.
- Scour the farmers market- Sometimes there are awesome bargains here! Just be sure to go at the right time. Near the end of the day, the farmer's are eager to get rid of their harvest and will cut you an excellent deal. It never hurts to ask.

Talk about certain foods being in season - Fortune today actually reported that you can buy lobsters cheaper than hot dogs! Of course, that is most likely only in those cities where you have lobster fishermen.
