You've probably already figured out that you can save a substantial amount of cash if you forgo the theater and watch movies and dvds at home. But why not take it to the next level and save even more when your buying/renting movies for home use?
- Join a movie club- Save money on rentals and avoid late fees by joining a movie club. They have different plans, and your sure to find one that fits you and your needs. The way these services work is simple. You choose a plan based on how many dvd's you want to have at home a time. Plans vary from $6/month to have one at a time, up to $17 for three at time, etc. No late fees, ever. You just can't check out another dvd until you return the ones you have. Try Netflix or Blockbuster Online. Don't forget about your free trial!
- Get used DVDs- Most stores that sell new DVDs will sell used DVDs for up to half off. Most are inspected to ensure that they are not damaged, and as long as there is a guarantee, there is no risk. It's a great way to get a really good movie for around $5-10.
- Buy on the Internet- Amazon.com sells new and used DVDs for as little as $3.00. (Just make sure the shipping is worth it...looks like shipping for used DVDs is about $3. New ones qualify for Amazon's "Super Saver" free shipping.
- Start an exchange club- Gather a few of your movie-loving neighbors and friends together and discuss exchanging and sharing movies to catch all the latest flicks while saving money.
- Skip all the extras- DVDs that don't have bonus features are usually cheaper. Do you really need to watch that commentary? Don't buy the Director's cut unless you really are a collector.
- Shop discount stores- Forgo the major retailers, and check out discount chains like Big Lots, Dollar General or Family Dollar to save a few bucks on DVDs.
- Rent for free- Try visiting your local library. In addition to the typical selection of classics, they sometimes carry blockbusters. If it's free, why not check it out? Do remember to return them though...your library may not be as forgiving as the corner video store, and it's just the right thing to do.
- Purchase smart- Only purchase movies that are family favorites, and are sure to be watched over and over. If you only plan on watching it once or twice, renting is the way to go.
- Shop at the thrift store- Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and other thrift stores typically have a home entertainment aisle with movies and DVDs marked way down. Just make sure they aren't damaged. Also scour garage and estate sales.
- Whats so special about it?- Don't pay up to 25% more for the "special edition". It's usually just different packaging and a few extras you won't watch more than once.

Re: Save money on movies and dvds
Great tips. I use #7 all of the time since free is my favorite price.

I like Tip #7 too. You can also make requests at your local library for them to buy new title DVDs.
