As a pet owner you are responsible for providing the necessary care for the pets in your charge. This goes beyond simply providing food and shelter, and in some cases can be quite an expensive undertaking. Certain pets require minimal care while others look to you for their very survival.
With this in mind it is important for pet owners to understand that when it comes to the health and safety of your pet, money cannot be an issue. Unfortunately this is not the case with many families who are struggling to stay afloat in these tough economic times. How do you save money on your pet care costs when you are already working with a limited budget? Here we look at ways to reduce or lower pet care costs to ensure your pets receive the care needed to be happy and healthy.

Veterinary Care
Pet owners face a big challenge when it comes to providing quality yet affordable veterinary care for their pets. The following tips will help you reduce the costs of expensive veterinary care.

  • Alternative organizations- Obviously you can't take your pet to just anyone for routine or emergency care, however you can save big bucks by seeking alternatives to the traditional veterinarian. Consider contacting local animal shelters or even colleges that have veterinary medicine programs to see if they offer lower cost alternatives.
  • Community assistance- There are groups in many communities that understand when human families are in need, so are their pet family members. Do some research to see if any community organizations offer assistance in paying for your pets medical needs.
  • Pet medications- This is often the biggest bill if your animal is sick or requires regular medication to treat an ongoing condition. Talk to your veterinarian about ways to save money on medication including healthy natural alternatives or getting the prescription through the mail. In most cases if you explain your financial situation to the veterinarian they may be willing to help you find ways to make medication more affordable.

Basic care
Saving money on veterinary care might be one of the best ways to reduce costs but there are other ways to manage pet costs that you incur on a regular basis.

  • Food- Feeding your pet a quality food that is still affordable can be a bit of a challenge. Whenever possible you want to feed the highest quality food as it helps you pet stay healthy and ward of potential veterinarian bills. Look for coupons for pet food or contact food manufacturers for discounts. Try to buy the biggest package available as buying several smaller packages will end up costing you more money. Also remember that you can prepare some pet food at home as long as you know what the nutritional needs of your pet are before doing so. This is not the same as feeding household pets leftovers, rather preparing their food with homemade ingredients. Talk to your vet before switching to a homemade diet to ensure your pet is not missing out on necessary nutrients.
  • Toys, bedding and other pet products- Your pet might enjoy some of the products available on the market however they do not need them to survive. A pet bed might be nice but a blanket would serve the same purpose. Look at where you spend money and see if there are healthy alternatives to overpriced pet products that provide the same comfort or entertainment.

Saving money on pet expenses may seen challenging but it is not impossible. It is important to remember that if the time comes that you are no longer able to properly care for your pet, it is time to look for help. The majority of pet owners love their animals and would do anything to keep them healthy and happy. By reducing your pet care costs you can ensure your beloved family member stays with the family.
