Save Water with Low-Flow Shower Heads

Posted In:  water bills

Low-flow shower heads work by restricting the flow of water and mixing more air into the water stream. The added air makes it seem like you are getting the same amount of water.  They are very similar in principal to the aerators you commonly see on kitchen sinks.

The average shower head uses 5 gallons of water per minute (gpm) while a low flow model will deliver 2.5 gpm or less. For an investment of  around $10 -$20 you can save $50-$75 per year on your water bill and $20-$50 or more per year on heating bills ( for the hot water ), depending on your current showerhead and utility rates. A new showerhead usually pays for itself the first year.  Oh, and it cuts into the savings, but you can take longer showers without running out of hot water...something of a bonus if you use do that only occasionally.

Do watch out though...because low-flow heads flow less water, they are more likely to scald you when a toilet is flushed, which drops the pressure of the cold water in your pipes. You might want to lower the temperature of your hot water heater, which will also save you money.
We have a great selection of low flow showerheads in our gadgets store.
