If you need to send a fax, there are several ways to do it for free, and avoid the per-page charges and inconvenience of having to drive to a mail and copy center.
There are some limitations, but the following options do work well, and the price is right...
- FaxZero - Up to 3 pages per fax, and two faxes per day for free. It does put an ad on your cover page. Accepts word docs, pdf files, and plain text.
- FreeFax - No page or per-day limits, but only accepts plain text.
- Send via web browser Free, no limits, but text only.
- Send via email Also free. You send an email with a special format that routes it to an email to fax gateway.
Overall, there are decent options if you need to either send text-only faxes regularly, or more complex documents from microsoft word or pdf files occasionally.
If your needs are greater than that, you probably need to look beyond the free options.

Re: Send faxes for free using your web browser.
I wish I'd known about that last time I was buying a home far away! I didn't have the fax feature set up on my computer because I thought I'd never need it. It cost a fortune to have to fax stuff they wanted back ASAP plus the hassle of having to run to town all the time. Thanks billeater. :)
