Thirty-five states, plus the District of Columbia have regulations that require insurance providers to offer a specific discount to drivers over 55 that have taken a safe driving course.
How much does the mature driver discount save me?
Of course, the insurance companies aren't very excited about these mandatory discounts, and have fought their existence, and don't make information about them broadly available. Organizations like AARP have lobbied for them, and have had success in the majority of states. Although the discounts vary by location, they are usually around 10%, and last for two to three years after taking the driving course, at which point you can take the class again and renew.

How do I get the mature driver discount?
- Before you take a class, call your insurance company and inquire about the discount. Even if your state isn't listed above, many insurance companies will offer the discount voluntarily, if you ask.

- After completing the class, contact your insurance company again to find out how to secure your new discount.

That's an excellent point. I have been taking advantage of the Texas law that allows us (not just seniors) to get reduced auto insurance (10%?) rates by taking defensive driving course every 3 years.
It's even easier to take this course (link below) ($25?) and get the credit. It seems almost too easy to do, but very few Texans take advantage of the offer. Perhaps they are way too rich to spend their valuable time learning how to be a better driver.

While you are talking to your insurance agent about a discount for being over 55, see if you may qualify for any other ones as well. It is possible that you could save even more.
If you haven't consolidated your insurance policies with one company yet, this could be a good time.
