Stockpiling for Savings: A Short Guide

The economy today has problems everywhere. One of those problems is the rising prices of groceries. Groceries are costing more and more each year. People are no longer getting the same cost of living increase raises they used to get, meaning grocery shopping is increasingly straining. Despite the difficulties, there are many ways to save. One of the best ways is to stockpile products when you see great sales.

While costs may be high, many stores have incredible weekly savings designed to draw people to the store. These usually require signing up for the bonus program, which is free of charge. When you see great deals, it's a smart idea to pile up on things.

What Goods can be Stockpiled?

Obviously, not every item can be stockpiled. For example, bread and milk have short shelf lives, so you don't want to load up on them and not be able to use them. Other items never expire or can be stored for up to one year in the freezer, so you can stockpile as much as you want or can fit in your storage space.

The first thing to think about is how often you go through certain things. Let's say you eat a lot of potato chips. Potato chips don't last forever, but they can last a couple months without being opened. If you see a deal such as two bags for $5, you might want to consider four or six bags.

With items you use often that last only a few months, you want to build a smaller stockpile simply because they are perishable. Other items, like canned goods, have much longer shelf lives. When you see a deal like ten cans of soup for $10, it doesn't hurt to stockpile those items and store them in your basement, where it is cool. Cans only last six months during summer temperatures, so storing them in a smart place can save a lot of money.

Great Deals

Many essential items cost more than you'd like but are often on sale. These are items that you will always need, such as toilet paper, paper towels, detergent, and other supplies.

I've seen the cost of toilet paper rise a lot the past couple of years. Knowing that toilet paper never goes bad, I recently bought four packs of twelve rolls each when I saw a great sale. I do the same when I see laundry detergent on sale. I usually buy at least a couple of jugs so that I have them.

Planning is Important

The key to stockpiling is staying within your budget. Stockpiling is great, but you don't want to invest all of your money in toilet paper. That's why it's a good idea to plan ahead. Grab all the local ads or check the websites of all your area stores and see who has what on sale.

You can make a plan of attack and no exactly how much you want to spend on groceries. If you buy what you need for that week and have an extra ten dollars in your grocery budget, purchase some items you can stockpile like napkins or canned goods. Not only will it save you money, it is also one less thing you have to worry about the next time you go shopping.

Stockpiling also means you never have to have that moment where you run out of something you really need. When that happens, many of us are forced to run to the local convenience store and pay too much. Stockpiling is a smart choice in any economy, especially the economy we have today.
