In almost every town across the country we have thrift stores. These are basically second hand shops full of clothes, electronics and all sorts of other brick & brack that others have now considered useless. While they say, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure", there is a lot more then you think at the local thrift store. The thrift store is actually packed with money saving solutions for you and your family.
Before we even start to talk about the great finds in the thrift and second hand shops, let’s first talk about spending habits of most consumers. Consumers these days are often targeted by large groups of marketing teams whose sole purpose is to make you believe you need their product and they will use any and all means to do so. Did you ever notice that jingle or song from the commercial of the product you just saw or heard on TV? Sure you have, that's the results of the marketing teams hard work, but let's get back to the overspending and impulsive part...
So now that you know that there are these money hungry marketing teams out there trying their best to lure that money out of your pocket. There still is the impulsive action of you actually deciding to spend the money on something without first really thinking if you need it. Combining the impulsiveness of a shopper with the forces driven by a marketing team designed to make you buy that new product. The results can be billions of dollars in useless spending by consumers on things that they really don't need. This is now the part where we will give you a perfect example of how not thinking before you buy can cause you to waste lots of money on items you don't need.
Rewinding back to the days of the VCR, Beta Max, cassette tape and the ever so famous vinyl record we can start to look at a massive spending electronics-spending streak at its early stages. The VCR and the cassette tape were similar in many ways but different in major aspects as one was meant to play and record only audio and the other designed to play video as well as sound. The nice part about the VCR and the cassette player was that they could record your favorite TV show or song with just the touch of one button. You were only able to play a record but some will argue that a vinyl record is the purest form of music because of its great quality
In today's electronic age we have replaced the above with the DVD, mp3, and CD which are all basically do the same thing as the VCR, and the cassette player and the record BUT you may be surprised to know that the older electronics like the vcr and the cassette player actually offered more options then the new latest and greatest electronics. Let's do a little comparison of these formats of media, so we can explain how billions of dollars are wasted and then we will tell you how that thrift store can help you find solutions to put thousands of dollars in your back account VS the pockets of these rich corporations.
The VCR had all the functions that a DVD player has today plus it was able to record off of the TV set or another VCR with the touch of a button. Now a DVD player has these functions but you actually need a DVDR recorder to record and even then some shows and programs can be recorded. The CD format was the big craze years ago followed by the mp3. These formats were supposed bring the music to life more by being digitally re-mastered to have that original sound and now year’s later vinyl records are argued to actually be the best in sound.
Now the above example is just one way consumers have wasted money just by switching formats because someone else’s idea what thought to be better only to revert to the original sound format.
We now want to show you how to save thousands of dollars by dusting off those long forgotten things that are hiding in the deep corners of the attic, in the basement, garage or maybe even on a top shelf of a closet.
Now some of these things may have been placed in the closet for many reasons, and that is why the thrift store has the solution to save you money.
Here is some ways you can save money by visiting the thrift store.
Everyone Loves A Classic Movie:
Lets say you have a bunch of VCR tapes laying around in your attic or wherever like most of us do, you could go to the local thrift store and pick up a VCR for as little as $5 dollars and then you would have all sorts of movies you can watch instantly with no fees and best of all everyone loves a good classic movie!
Enjoy That Movie with Some Air Pop:
Everyone loves popcorn while watching their movie but at $3.99 for 3 bags at the local grocery store can be quite expensive if you are trying to feed that large family or group of friends during the movie. The good news is that many thrift store shelves are lined with those old air puff popcorn makers that work with store bought popcorn kernels. These popcorn kernels are bought by the jar for as little as 49 cents and the jar can make 10x what the 3 bags would provide, How’s that’s for saving money.
Enjoy Some Rock N Roll!
If you have a bunch of cassettes or vinyl records lying around you could pick up a record player from the thrift store. Maybe you have a record player but no records, a tape player with no tapes, why not pick up something cheap and second hand to bring these this great music back to life.
Now that we have just given you a few examples of how you can match items in your attic with things from the thrift store its your turn to use your creativity to see how you can bring those old things back to life and entertain yourself as well as friends with stuff that you already have combined with a simple purchase from the local thrift store.
So next time you are tempted by that TV commercial to buy there product, remember that there is another way that is cheaper, and will let you have the same or if not better experience. Take a trip into your attic or the thrift store today and start saving money right away!

Re: A Trip To The Thrift Store Could Make Your Attic Worth ...
That's a very good article, thanks! I love the VCR idea especially! You can get more VCR tapes at flea markets for almost nothing too. I've seen many an old movie I'd have liked to have seen again there that you can't find on DVD, even in the bargain buckets.
